Kutapira formed in 2005 through a Canada Council program supporting professional artists working with youth in community. Since then, the group has developed an original style drawn from the traditions of the African Diaspora. Their virtuosity pays tribute to their mentors as band members switch effortlessly between marimbas, drum kit, timbales, and authentic African and Afro Cuban hand percussion.

With cultural roots in Dominica, Mozambique, Canada, Portugal, Scotland, Ireland, England, and China, Kutapira truly exemplifies the term world music .
